Podcast Appearance: Why Most Lean Efforts Fix the Wrong Problems First

Most manufacturers know the theory of constraints. Fewer apply it before they start fixing things.

That gap — between knowing and doing — is where most improvement efforts quietly fail. Teams work hard, implement changes, and wonder why the customer still can’t see the progress. The answer, more often than not, is that the deepest constraint is still in place. Everything built around it looks like improvement. Nothing downstream changes.

Hessam Vali has seen this pattern across decades of manufacturing consulting. As the founder of Techam and Optegrity Solutions and a lean practitioner based in Wichita, he has led transformations across complex manufacturing environments — and he’s developed a framework that is deceptively simple: find the constraint first. Everything else is noise until you do.

He recently joined the Gemba Academy podcast to talk about why improvement stalls, what it actually takes to build a culture that sustains it, and the role technology should — and should not — play in a lean environment.
